A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award given to eight faculty members

Twenty one students of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) received the G.D. Naidu Young Scientist Award for their work in the area of mechanical engineering and research.

Dipankar Banerjee, Professor, Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru presented the award to the students during a conference on “Fast Track Research” organised by the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering at VIT, a press release said.

Mr. Banerjee said that research cannot be accomplished through the study of books. It can be achieved only through innovation and imagination, and science and technology offered this.

VIT chancellor G. Viswanathan handed over the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award to eight faculty members for guiding the young research scholars in the area of mechanical engineering. Addressing the gathering, he said that the awards were given to young research scholars who had excelled in mechanical, design, automation, production, industrial and thermal engineering.

In developed countries, growth had been made possible due to achievements in production and industrial engineering. Thirty per cent of China’s entire growth was due to production engineering. It stood at 14-15% in India. The country had to spend a lot of money due to huge rate of imports made by it. Hence, the Prime Minister launched the Make in India programme, he said, according to the release.

He added that it was the duty of young engineers to make sure that growth in production engineering in the country was on par with China.

Over 450 persons took part in the conference. Among others, Anand A. Samuel, Vice-Chancellor and S. Narayanan, Pro Vice-Chancellor were present.
