More than 90,000 trucks and other goods carriers in the State went off the road following an indefinite strike call given by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) on Friday.

Transport Wing Chief of Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Harcharan Singh Sahni said the main demand of the transporters was to bring down the price of diesel.

The price hike in diesel is affecting business of transporters badly and the measures of the government including that of implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST) is an addition to that problem, he said.

“The AIMTC had participated in several level of talks with the Central Government but all in vain as the government didn’t give ear to the demands”, said Sahni. He further informed that 20 small and big  organizations of transporters are supporting their strike.

Regarding key demands of transporters, Sahni said they were on strike against the price hike in diesel and failure of government to control it, quarterly amendments of fuel prices, fixing rates of diesel at national level which should not differ from state to state. There is a demand for Toll free barriers all over the country, transparency in insurance premium, relaxation in GST and TDS and amendment in e-way bill, he said.
