An inter-state gang that allegedly duped over 100 people across the country on pretext of renewing their insurance policies and offering bonus on such policies was busted, Dehradun police said on Saturday.

In initial investigations, police in Vasant Vihar area arrested five people and seized their bank account documents, mobile phones and a car.

“The gang was busted during investigation of an case registered in Vasant Vihar police station. Complainant Vijay Kumar had alleged that one of the accused Arun Singh used forged documents of his shop in the area to open a bogus company and bank accounts that he used to do transactions,” said city superintendent of police Pradeep Rai said.

“During the investigation, it was found that the four accused used to run a fake call centre from the National Capital Region (NCR) and used to call people using the database of contact numbers which they bought illegally from various organisations.

“Arun was providing them bank bank accounts to park money accumulated by duping targets. He was charging a commission of 10% for providing the accounts,” he said.

“It seems that the gang is much bigger and investigations are on to nab other accused involved in it,” said Rai.

Arrested people were identified as Arun Singh, 32, a resident of Raipur area of Dehradun, Ankit Kumar, 29, Siddhant Choudhary, 29 - both residents of Ghaziabad - Himanshu Moga, 27, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh and Rohit, 27, a resident of Delhi.
