In the following month of July, we celebrate parenthood. We express gratitude towards our parents for giving us family environment to grow.  Parents play an important role as protectors, providers, role models for children. National Parents Day is an occasion to honour their endless contributions towards children. Free Press spoke to residents about their memories and experiences with their parents. Excerpts

Mother takes lead

“Marriage changes life. As a parent, our priority changes and we focus on wellness of our child. In most cases, mother takes the lead and cares for child more. Even in our case, Tulshi manages her responsibilities at workplace, home and most importantly towards our child perfectly. As children, neither of us understood challenges of being a parent. We understand them now and feel grateful to our parents. They have taught us everything and raised us right. We always try to follow their example.”

Taking responsibility

“Parents always know what is best for us. They protect us to the point till they are sure that we cannot manage it alone. I remember when I learned an important lesson. Tyre of my two-wheeler punctured for the first time. I called up my father and asked him to pick me up. He asked me to manage it on my own. I learned to take responsibility of my action and decision that day. It was an important lesson, which I want to teach to my little twins now.”

Lessons on saving

The most important lesson that I learned from my parents is about never wasting anything. We never had financial problems but my father never allowed me to throw away a perfectly good pen. I would say my fountain pen isn’t working and would pick up a new one. However, dad would check and re-fill my pen. I did not understand importance of re-using as I was 11 years old then. When I grew up, I realised why he stopped me from getting a new pen and insisted that I reuse old ones. He taught me lessons on saving.”

Parenting is like planting

“Parenting is like planting a sapling and nurturing it. Basics remain the same, be it taking care of our kids or our parents taking care of us. We have to provide right soil to plant and take care of it till it grows. Same is with children. You have to ensure that they get right platform, environment to grow. We have to take care of them till they become mature.”
