Women: the driving force

| | Bhopal

Sir — We often talk about women empowerment. There is an outstanding example of such empowerment through self-help groups (SHG). Let me start with a few vital statistics. In 2014, there were around five lakh such groups covering 52 families.

Between 2014 and now, there has been an addition of 20 lakh groups that now cover over 2.25 crore families across the country. This quantum jump augurs well for sustained women empowerment and womens’ contributions to the national economy .

I have had several opportunities to interact with members of SHGs in Madhya Pradesh. Each member is an inspiring example of resolution, collective effort and entrepreneurship.

Facing all odds, these SHGs keep marching forward to help improve quality of life in rural areas. It is our duty to applaud womens’ contribution and give them all support in taking up initiatives like these.
