Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested, the police said on Friday. They said over four kg of heroin worth about ₹16 crore was seized from them.
On Thursday, the police received a tip-off that two members of a drug cartel — Binod Rajbongshi (40) from Assam and Riyazuddin (39) from Uttar Pradesh — would come to supply a consignment of drugs to one of their Delhi-based contacts, Nasir.
Trap laid
A trap was laid near Sector 18 Rohini metro station and the accused were nabbed, the police said. A search led to the recovery of 4.07 kg of heroin from them. The accused told the police during interrogation that the heroin was delivered to them by Assam resident Maina. Binod and Riyazuddin also revealed that they were involved in drug peddling for the past four to five years, said DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
The accused would travel by road or train to Manipur and Golaghat in Assam to procure heroin from Maina. A Special Cell team has been sent to Golaghat to identify and apprehend kingpin of the syndicate, the officer said.
In order to throw the police off his scent, Binod would sometimes alight from the train midway and switch modes of transport to reach his destination.
Riyazuddin is a contractor with the UP Jal Nigam but took to peddling drugs to earn more money.
The police suspect that Maina collects the heroin from the Manipur-Myanmar border.
