MUMBAI: A woman who was run over by a train at Bandra station on Thursday evening was identified over 17 hours later after her five-year-old son, being treated for injuries after a miraculous escape, started muttering, “Borivli, Borivli”. His two-year-old sister is seriously injured and unconscious.

Bandra railway police identified her as Priti Gupta, 25, on Friday. She had left her Borivli (east) home with son Aryan, 5, and daughter Aradhana, 2, on Thursday. When she failed to return till 1.30am on Friday, her husband, Rajesh, 30, who runs a general store, filed a missing complaint with the Kasturba Marg police.

As soon as the traumatized boy was a little better, the cops asked him where he lived. He could say little, but muttered “Borivli”. “We got in touch with the police in Borivli and within an hour got details from Kasturba Marg police about Rajesh Gupta’s missing complaint. The details matched that of the deceased and the two toddlers,” said Bandra GRP senior inspector Sunilkumar Jadhav.

Priti had left her house with the two children around 6pm without telling her husband, Rajesh’s complaint said.

Priti’s body was found severed on the tracks between platform 4 and 5 at Bandra station at around 8.31pm on Thursday. Onlookers alerted cops and she was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. The children are being treated there under the care of women constables. Aradhana has suffered injuries to her head, face and eyes and is unconscious, said a railway cop. Aryan escaped miraculously and has only facial injuries. He is scared and crying, said the policemen.

On Friday, the railway police alerted their counterparts at Kasturba Marg, who informed Rajesh about his wife’s accident. Till late evening, he had not reached Cooper hospital mortuary, where the body has been kept, or Bhabha, where the children are being treated.

The cops are yet to ascertain whether it is a case of suicide or if Priti was knocked down by a train while crossing the tracks. They suspect she got onto the tracks after alighting from a fast local with her kids. They said the picture will be clearer after they record Rajesh’s statement.
