Transport unions begin indefinite strike over cut in diesel prices, highway tolls

Demanding cut in diesel prices and highway tolls, the transport unions led by All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) began nationwide indefinite strike on July 20. The truckers demanded regulation of diesel prices under GST and slash in highway toll tax. Due to strike, the general public may witness shortage of milk, vegetables and other food items. Several bus associations have also extended their support to the truckers. The members of AIMTC met Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari but nothing concrete came out of it.
