Submerged land: Farmers yet to get compensation

more-in

The KRRS said on Friday that farmers whose land got submerged owing to raising of the storage level of water at Thumbe vented dam early this year, haven’t still got compensation.

Mangaluru City Corporation raised the storage level from 5m to 6m in January for providing more drinking water to Mangaluru city. But none of the farmers in Sajipamunnur, Pane Mangalore, Narikombu, B Mooda and Kallige villages have got ground rent and compensation even after six months, Subrahmanya Bhat, president, Bantwal taluk unit of the KRRS said.

He was speaking at a meeting of farmers called by Sasikanth Senthil S., Deputy Commissioner.

Mr. Bhat said even when the level was raised from 4 m to 5 m in 2017, only 70% affected farmers got the land rent and compensation in the five villages.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) guidelines have not been followed regarding this, he alleged.

Prabhakara Mayya, a farmer from Belthangady, suggested creating taluk-level agriculture parks to lure youth to agriculture. A farmer suggested that hobli-level fodder units should be established. The DC said about 25 land surveyors and 20 village accountants would be posted in Dakshina Kannada shortly.

Framers can now get copies of land record or RTC on plain white papers at gram panchayat offices provided the panchayats paid prescribed amount for it in advance to the revenue department.

If there are any lapses in the same due to communication gap with gram panchayat offices, it would be addressed within a week, Mr. Senthil said.

Some farmers demanded the rejuvenation of defunct South Kanara Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Society and save its property in Mangaluru. The cooperative had been opened in 1919.
