Do not use water order issued at Horseneck Beach State Reservation

The order does not impact beach and ocean use.

WESTPORT — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued a do not use water order for the Horseneck Beach State Reservation, effectively immediately.

The order comes after routine water samples collected at the reservation’s public water supply contained E. coli bacteria, likely related to significant precipitation events and the resulting rainwater runoff.

The order does not impact beach and ocean use.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation has shut off the water to all sinks, water fountains and rinse facilities. Currently, the public water supply is being heavily chlorinated. Additionally, DCR is exploring options to have potable water delivered via truck. Restroom facilities will remain available and hand sanitizer has been placed within the facilities

E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
