HYDERABAD: A premature baby weighing only 375 grams was born five months ago at Rainbow Children’s Hospitals, Banjara Hills. Cherry was born prematurely at just 25-weeks of pregnancy and suffered from multiple complications including jaundice, feeding difficulties and chronic lung disease.
The doctors claimed that Cherry is South Asia’s smallest surviving baby.

A hospital’s medical team had closely monitored Cherry’s overall health and had kept her on ventilator-support for 105-days. While the baby weighed only 375-grams when she was born on February 27, the miracle baby weighed 1.980-kg when discharged. She was born Saurabh and Nitika, a couple from Chattisgarh. The couple had who suffered from four abortions earlier.
Director of Intensive Care Services at Rainbow Hospital, Dr Dinesh Kumar Chirla said, “The initial three to four-days post-birth are very crucial as babies are most fragile during this time. In this case, there were many health challenges like the drop in oxygen and BP levels.” Doctors said that the baby had gained considerable weight and was nearing normalcy. After 128 days in the hospital, Cherry had started breathing without any support and doctors expect her to lead a normal life like any other infant.
The baby was only 20-cm in length when born and could fit in one’s palm. Ideally, a healthy newborn is supposed to weigh between 2.7 kgs and 3.5 kgs.
