CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday said Delhi is fast becoming a safe haven for drug peddlers and smugglers, and the Delhi Police need to check this.
The chief minister, in his letter addressed to the Union home minister
Rajnath Singh, urged him to issue appropriate directions to the Delhi Police. "I seek your indulgence in the matter for directing the Delhi Police to formulate an effective strategy to check and control drug peddling and smuggling," Amarinder said.
The chief minister also requested Rajnath to direct Delhi cops to work in close coordination with the police of the neighbouring states, including Punjab, in an effort to ensure a drug-free society. In the recent past, there have been a number of cases of Delhi Police arresting drug smugglers ferrying consignments from Jharkhand and other states for delivery in Punjab.
Even the anti-drug special task force headed by ADGP HS Sidhu had recently warned that a synthetic drug called "cut," which is mixed with
heroin and smack, had caused several deaths in the state. The STF had claimed that African cartels operating in and around Delhi are responsible for supply of such drugs.
