Top 5 Landmark No-Confidence Motion That Marked History

Modi’s BJP government is put to test in parliament when Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan accepted the no-confidence motion appealed by TDP. The TDP has been in a tiff with NDA government for not giving special status to Andhra Pradesh. July 20th, 2018 is witnessing a long- day debate before voting. This is the 26th no-confidence motion that moved in the parliament so far since independence. The NDA government must prove the majority test to remain in power, failing which can lead to its termination.

Here is top 5 landmark no-confidence motion that marked history: 

1. Acharya Kripalani moved the first ever no-confidence motion on the floor of Lok Sabha in August 1963, immediately after the failure of India- China war.
2.  Former PM Indira Gandhi had faced the most number of no confidence during her political lifespan. She dealt with 15 no-confidence motion against her regime.
3. In July 1993, Narasimha Rao government was brought under tribunal by Ajay Mukhopadhyay of the CPI and was the closest witnessed in any no-confidence motion voting. Mr. Rao was accused of corruption, promoting Hindu- Muslim polarisation and not arresting those responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
4. In April 1999, Atal Bihari Vajpayee government drained after failing to get a majority on the floors of Lok Sabha. He lost by a single vote when BJP’s coalition partner AIADMK withdrew its support.
5. The CPI(M) in 2008 had tabled no-confidence motion against the UPA led by Manmohan Singh in protest against the Indo- US nuclear deal. This act of opposition by CPI(M) was supported by BJP.
