Victim hit multiple times on the head with an iron pestle; accused on the run

A 22-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his cousin in south-east Delhi’s Bhagwan Nagar over a monetary dispute, the police said on Thursday.

The victim, Suihaimi Khangah, from Manipur worked with a Gurugram-based call centre, the police said. Around 5.30 a.m., they received a PCR call stating that a man was lying injured in Bhagwan Nagar. A team rushed to the spot and found blood on the street outside a house in the area.

The locals then informed the police that the injured was already taken to the hospital.

Succumbed to injuries

“Khangah succumbed to serious head injuries during treatment at the hospital. His elder brother reached the hospital and identified him,” said a senior police officer.

“The victim, his cousin and one of their friend were returning home after dinner at a friend’s place. On the way, Shingham asked the victim to return ₹17,000. He said that Khangah had fraudulently withdrawn the amount using his debit card. They had a fight over the issue in front of their house. In-between the fight, the accused went to the flat and came back with an iron pestle. He hit the victim on his head repeatedly and fled the spot,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East), Chinmoy Biswal. During preliminary investigation, it was found that the victim, his brother A.S. Shunreiwung, and his cousin Lei Shingham were residing in the same two-bedroom flat in Bhagwan Nagar.

They were from the same village in Manipur and employed at call centres in Noida and Gurugram. They have been living in the city for the past three to four years, the police said, adding that Shingham has been staying with the victim for the past one-and-half year.

“Shingham is absconding. An first information report under Indian Penal Code Section 302 has been registered at Sunlight Colony police station. The friend who was on the spot during the assault has narrated the sequence of the events. But we have not given clean chit to anyone in the case. The roles of the people involved need to be verified. A police team has been formed to nab the accused,” Mr. Biswal said.
