Man dies in crash, friend allegedly assaults driver and steals car
A man has died and his friend has been arrested after a dramatic crash and assault near Albury in southern NSW on Thursday night.
Emergency services were called to Lowe Street at Howlong, about 30 kilometres west of Albury, after a crash between a Nissan Navara utility and a motorcycle about 8.30pm.
The rider died at the scene, police said. He is yet to be formally identified, but police believe he was in his 20s.
A male friend, 28, who had been riding with him on another motorcycle, was not injured.
Police allege the 28-year-old became violent and assaulted the driver of the utility and stole his vehicle.
The 65-year-old driver of the Nissan suffered head injuries and was taken to Albury Base Hospital.
He will also undergo mandatory testing.
Following inquiries, officers arrested a 28-year-old man near Lowe Street a short time later and he was taken to Albury police station.
Officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
