Wanted to quit due to ‘bad atmosphere’

The family of 17-year-old Gaurav, who was beaten to death by a group of boys, said that he wanted to leave his current school because of “bad atmosphere”.

Gaurav’s stepfather Razi Ahmed said, for the last few months the boy had been telling him and his mother about various issues he was facing due to which he wanted to leave the school.

“He said the school was dominated by students from a minority community who would gang up against him every now and then. He was bullied,” Ahmed alleged. However, the family claimed they were unaware of what lead to the scuffle on Wednesday.

Gaurav used to skip school often out of fear, the family said.

Brother was targeted

The family claimed that about a week ago, Gaurav’s elder brother Govinda (24) was allegedly beaten up by a gang of boys in Durgapuri while he was on his way back home from work. “They stopped him and said that he is Gaurav’s brother which is why they were thrashing him. They did not tell him the reason,” Ahmed said. But Govinda did not inform the family until Wednesday thinking “it was not a big issue and the parents would get worried unnecessarily”. He also did not inform the police.

The school’s management was unavailable for comment.
