At 40-degree centigrade mark, Assam is witnessing one of the hottest summers in decades this year (EPS|Manu R Mavelil)
GUWAHATI: At 40-degree centigrade mark, Assam is witnessing one of the hottest summers in decades this year with the heatwave conditions claiming two lives in the state on Friday. Unofficial sources put the death toll at four.
A constable, identified as Badarsing Narzary, collapsed and died soon after on duty during Governor Jagdish Mukhi’s visit to Kokrajhar. Lalmohan Barman, also a constable, was admitted to the civil hospital in the town.
In northern Assam’s Sonitpur district, an unidentified person died of heatstroke in Balipara town. According to unconfirmed reports, two others died of heatwave in Morigaon and Kamrup districts.
Earlier in the day, 21 students of a women’s college in Hojai town collapsed and later, they were admitted to a hospital. Officials in the district attributed it to the extreme heatwave conditions.
According to meteorologists at the Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar on the outskirts of Guwahati, the highest temperature on Friday was recorded at 39-degree centigrade. Guwahati had recorded a temperature of 40-degree centigrade way back in 1960.
Meteorologist Sunit Das told TNIE that the temperature was likely to fall as rainfall was expected in the next few days.
