CHENNAI: Anxious young faces look at the quizmaster as he reads out the question, and fingers hurriedly press the buzzers. The audience, consisting mostly of students, threw their hands in the air after each question, yearning to answer themselves.
The Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz Contest, held at the Kamarajar Arangam on Thursday saw the participation of over 475 teams from 130 schools. The second edition of the quiz, conducted by the Rotary Club of Chennai Galaxy, District 3232, featured a prelim round which consisted of a written test after which six teams qualified to the final. “We decided to start this as nobody was conducting a science and technology quiz in Chennai. We wanted it to go beyond students’ textbooks, and for them to learn things,” said Anshul Agarwal, event chairman, Rotary Club of Chennai Galaxy. The Chief Guest for the event was Minister for Tamil Official Language, Tamil Culture and Archeology, Government of Tamil Nadu, K Pandiarajan.
Quizmasters Ravi Mundori and Navin Jayakumar tested the students, from classes 8 to 12, on their knowledge of science and technology. “The questions were curated in such a way that two concepts were connected together by a concept which the students had to identify. The students, even if they didn’t understand the question, would understand the answer,” said Mundori. The six teams, each consisting of three students each, hailed from both Chennai and Trichy.
