Buried in the city as family cannot afford to fly body back home

A 24-year-old woman from Sudan, who was severely injured after she fell in the gap between an outstation train and the platform, died on Wednesday morning at the civic-run Sion Hospital. On July 12, Jowahir Abdullah had slipped into the gap while she was getting down from a long distance train at Dadar railway station. Abdullah lost both her legs in the accident and was under treatment since then.

On Wednesday morning, she went into septicemia shock which led to her death. According to forensic head Dr. Rajesh Dere, Abdullah’s wounds were badly infected. He said, “She had a traumatic amputation at the time of the accident. There was no scope for the doctors to re-attach her limbs through a surgery. The infection from the wound proved fatal.”

A resident of South Sudan, Abdullah was pursuing her degree in civil engineering from Pune. On July 12, she was to take a flight back home as she had completed her graduation. “She had been studying here for four years. She graduated only last week,” said Sarah James, a close friend of Abdullah who lives in Delhi.

Soon after the accident, Abdullah’s sister Dr. Hara Mustafa flew to Mumbai on July 15. Along with the trauma of her sister’s critical condition, Dr. Mustafa received the tragic news of their father’s death due to typhoid soon after she landed here.

She also struggled to find accommodation in hotels even as she had all the necessary identity proofs. After Abdullah’s death, the family had a tough time to get the body as the Sudanese embassy had not sent a no objection certificate. Eventually, the body was released at around 4.30 p.m. after the Dadar police gave a go-ahead surpassing the embassy.

Abdullah was buried in the burial ground at Marine Linea as the family could not afford to fly her body back home.
