In a bid to avoid pothole, teacher and her daughter are almost killed near Mumbai

In yet another pothole-related accident in Kalyan, a school teacher and her 12-year-old daughter were injured at Patripool bridge near Ambedkar junction on Wednesday. The accident occurred when the teacher tried to swerve away from a pothole. It would have turned worse for the mother-daughter duo, had a truck driver behind them not applied emergency brakes.

The road is maintained by the state-run MSRDC.

Five people have died and several injured owing to potholes since the onset of monsoon.

In Wednesday’s accident, the 32-year-old teacher, Bharti Nare, fractured her right hand, while her daughter suffered a minor injury. Nare, resident of Rambaug in Kalyan (West), is a sports teacher at Arya Gurukul School in Kalyan. Her daughter also studies in the same school.

Nare said the accident took place when she was returning from school at 4.15pm. “I was taking a turn near Ambedkar Junction, close to Patri bridge. From afar, I could not see potholes near a speed breaker. While trying to avoid the pothole, my bike veered off to a patch, which was covered with sand. My daughter escaped with a minor injury as she jumped off the bike. I tried to control the bike but it fell on my leg. A heavy vehicle coming from behind applied brakes, which saved our lives,” said Nare.

After being informed by passers-by, her husband, Chetan Nare, reached the spot and took his wife and daughter to a nearby hospital.

“My wife has received a fracture on her right hand, and minor injuries on her leg and left hand. My daughter suffered a minor internal injury on her waist,” said Chetan Nare, 36.
