NGO Abhaya bags award for social service

Thiruvananthapuram: Abhaya, an NGO working for poor and destitute woman, has bagged the first Abhijith Foundation award for social work. The award comprising Rs 2 lakh, a plaque and certificate will be handed over to Abhaya chairperson Sugathakumari by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala at a function to be held at Theerthapada Mandapam, Fort, at 6pm on Wednesday.
Sheeba Ameer, founder of Solace, a Thrissur-based organization that provides affordable medical, psychological and social help to cancer patients, won the award for best social worker. Television programme ‘Nalla Vartha’ bagged the award for journalism.

Abhijith Foundation is a city-based non-profitable organization established by Kottukal Krishnakumar in the memory of his son Abhijith. The annual awards for social service instituted by the organization will be presented on the death anniversary of Abhijith.

Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan will inaugurate the award distribution function, which will be presided over by former speaker and Abhijith Foundation’s patron N Shakthan.

A panel comprising Bishop A Dharmaraj Rasalam (CSI), Swami Aswathi Thirunal, Imam Moulavi Suhaib V P selected the awardees. tnn
