GURUGRAM: A 26-year-old woman, desperate to save her marriage and get her husband’s undivided attention, sought help from a tantrik, who claimed mastery in black magic that could solve all her problems.
The 33-year-old tantrik, with a shop near Gurgaon bus stand, performed several ‘pujas and rituals’ for over three weeks, extracting a total of Rs 61,000 from the woman.

However, the woman saw little change in the behaviour of her husband, who instead demanded a divorce. Infuriated, the woman confronted the tantrik who then claimed that her husband “has gone out of control and would not return”.

Finally, the woman filed a complaint against the tantrik, Mazid, alias Sameer, at Sector 14 police station on Tuesday, resulting in his arrest. Police said Sameer, originally from Rasidnagar in Meerut (UP), was produced in a city court on Wednesday and taken on two-day police remand for questioning.

According to the woman, a resident of Devilal Nagar colony, her husband, who works in a city-based private company, had been avoiding her and their three-year-old son for the past six months or so. He had been staying away from home frequently and she suspected he was having an extra-marital affair.

“I was very disturbed. Then I saw an advertisement of this baba who claimed he could solve all types of problems. On June 24, I finally contacted the tantric who asked me to visit his place (near the bus stand). He promised that my husband would return home and would behave properly with me. Then he asked for money on several occasions on one pretext or another. But yesterday (Tuesday), I was shocked when he said that my husband was out of control and he would not be able to do anything about it,” the woman told police.

Acting on the complaint, the police picked up the tantrik from his house and booked him under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC.

ASI Raj Kapoor, the investigating officer, said the tantrik had duped several people over the past 20 months. “He was running his business from a rented shop. A non-matric, he would lure clients by using pamphlets and advertisements, promising solutions for their problems,” said Kapoor.

His shop has been seized and police are now questioning him to find out about other people he had duped so far, said ASI Subhash Bokan, a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police.
