NAGPUR: The rural police helped widow of a police constable, who had died in a road accident on duty around a month ago, by handing over a cheque of Rs30 lakh at SP Shailesh Balkawade’s office.

Sources from rural police said the constable Harendra Singh Thakur was on highway traffic duty when he was killed in the accident. His family was suffering after the loss of the breadwinner. The rural police, after learning about the plight of the family, especially the widow Priyanka Thakur, worked out a monetary assistance scheme with HDFC Bank.

Priyanka Thakur received the cheque in presence of HDFC Bank manager Ganagdeep Narang, Sharad Mishra and SP Balkawade. Deputy SP Kailash Gawade (Rural), who had coordinated the assistance scheme, was also present.

On the occasion, Balkawade said families of police personnel facing such incidents or loss could be compensated in similar manner in future.

The efforts of the rural police top brass, with the initiative of the department, were lauded by the police personnel in the district.
