East civic body asks residents to process biodegradable waste

Concerned over increase of waste generation by residential societies and industries in huge quantity and lack of spaces to dispose the garbage generated everyday in its areas, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has advised residents to segregate and process biodegradable waste within their premises by developing waste treatment plant.

A senior official of the DEMS department of the EDMC said the corporation had organised a workshop on waste segregation and garbage disposal for identified institutions that produces 100 kg of waste per day. "They were advised to segregate and process biodegradable waste within their premises. To create awareness in this regards, the EDMC keep providing technical assistance to those institution that generate bulk waste," he said.

Also, the official said the rules also state that waste generators shall pay a user fee for solid waste management as specified in the by-laws of the local bodies. He said it is up to the waste generators to segregate and store the waste generated by them in three separate groups that is biodegradable, non-biodegradable and domestic hazardous waste.

"In case of non-biodegradable waste, can hand it over the segregated waste to authorised waste collectors as per the direction or notification of the local authorities after paying user charges that ranges from Rs 50 to 100 in residential areas and Rs 2000 to 5000 for commercial utilities," he said.

He said during the workshop organised recently by the civic body, over 250 bulk waste generators were informed about their duties and responsibilities, and appraised on the user fee that needs to be paid for solid waste management. Also, penal provisions / penalty clauses under the Solid Waste Management Bye-laws were discussed, the official said.

Representatives of various institutions who participated in the workshop requested EDMC officials to provide onsite training so that they can handle waste effectively which was accepted by the civic body, the official said.
