Safety checks on Gzb infra, housing projects

Ghaziabad: The district magistrate on Thursday ordered a comprehensive survey of all under-construction buildings and infrastructure projects in Ghaziabad in the backdrop of the twin building collapse in Greater Noida in which nine persons have died as per latest figures.
The Ghaziabad District Administration (GDA) has been directed to compile and submit a consolidated report of the findings within seven days.

District magistrate Ritu Maheshwari told TOI that the exercise has been undertaken to identify buildings that are vulnerable to risks and pose safety hazards. Unauthorized constructions, if any, will also be identified during the survey.

All zonal enforcement officials of the GDA have been directed to check structural safety of buildings constructed by the department.

“Letters are being issued to private builders to submit the status of the structural safety of buildings constructed by them. The building collapse in Greater Noida was a tragic and unfortunate incident. We plan to undertake measures to ensure that a disaster of this magnitude does not take place in Ghaziabad,” Maheshwari said.

The administration has further directed government agencies, including the public works department, Delhi metro and the NHAI, which are undertaking various infrastructure projects in Ghaziabad to submit certificates, if they have any, of the structural safety of these works.

“After the girder collapse incident at the under-construction Mohan Nagar metro station in April, we had sought structural safety certificates of all projects by government construction agencies in Ghaziabad. We have not received the certificates from any of the agencies so far. Reminders have been sent to these agencies,” said Maheshwari.

While GDA, as well as the GMC, keep a tab on safety aspects of buildings in urban areas, enforcement is lax in rural areas where ‘kaccha’ buildings have mushroomed in unauthorised colonies, officials said.

In January 2017, at least five persons, including two women and three children, had been killed after a two-storey house collapsed in Rahat Enclave, Loni.
