Watch And Hear New BMW M8 Coupe In Action

With the regular and M Performance versions of the new 8-Series Coupe out, BMW now has more time to focus on the development of the range-topping M8 edition.

Poised to take on the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe, the high-performance model was recently filmed testing in and around the Nurburgring.

While heavily camouflaged, we know that the M8 will have a more aggressive styling compared to the regular 8-Series models. Among other changes expected to be made are different bumpers with larger vents on both ends, what looks like a ducktail spoiler, quad exhaust pipes and larger wheels.

In the cabin, the BMW M8 will welcome a pair of body-hugging seats at the front, M-branded steering wheel and gearshift lever, and some trim updates, including carbon fiber to emphasize its racier character.

The cherry on top of the cake will be the engine, of course. It’s been reported that the new BMW M8 will use the same engine as the M5. This means a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, making 600PS (592hp / 442kW) and 750Nm (553lb-ft) of torque. But since it will “sit at the very top of our model range”, according to the BMW M chief, Frank van Meel, it could benefit from a power bump.

The exact number is unknown, but it could come with 625PS (617hp / 460kW), just like the M5 Competition Package, or perhaps a bit more.

BMW’s M division will use the same recipe for the M8 Convertible, too, which is being developed alongside its fixed-roof sibling. The open-top model will get a power retractable soft top, and due to the inevitable weight gains, it will probably be a couple of tenths of a second slower to 100km/h (62mph) than the Coupe.
