CHANDIGARH: To strengthen and improve the road and traffic safety, the
Haryana government has sanctioned Rs 9 crore under the Road Safety Fund for procurement of ultra-modern
equipments. It also includes the vehicles to prevent loss of human life in road accidents, keep a check on drunken driving, over speeding and strengthening e-challan system in the state.

General of Police (DGP) Haryana, B S Sandhu said that 61 alco-sensor, 402 e-challan machines, 12 each of interceptor vehicles, small and big cranes would be procured with the funds. This will help in strengthening the police machinery as well as to check and punish the people who are habitual of traffic violations.
The state police chief further informed that continuous steps were being taken by the government to make the police system updated and alert. In addition to these, traffic related equipments, reflective jacket and angle, face mask, bar light, large and effective barricade and traffic helmets would be purchased and proper publicity would also be ensured by organizing traffic awareness seminars and workshops in the districts.
We are quite serious with the increase in number of incidents of drunken driving as this can also lands other drivers and passers-by in trouble. At present, 248 alco-sensors are available with the police to deal with the people driving under influence of alcohol. Now, 61 more alco-sensors would be procured to keep a check on drunken driving, he added.
Sandhu said that riding on the concept of paperless work and digitalization, 402 e-challan machines would also be added to accelerate the challaning process and to recover the penalty on the spot. This paperless system would help in eliminating the scope of corruption in the challan process. At present, 512 e-challan machines are being used and there is a plan to make the system completely paper less by January 2019.
He further stated that police is working with 40 interceptor vehicles to counter the increase in the number of accidents caused due to over speeding on the roads and 64,245
challans have been issued in year 2017 alone. Proposal for procurement of 12 interceptor vehicles has been approved in this direction. Apart from this, 12 big and 12 small cranes will also be procured so that traffic can be immediately restored in any emergent situation in the state.
