DHARWAD: A black pet monkey (macaque), which died of electrocution at the Karnatak College campus, has found a place in the museum of the zoology department of the college, thanks to taxidermy.
On June 14, staff and students of the college found the monkey lying dead near the canteen after being electrocuted. They had decided to give it a decent burial and started preparation. Meanwhile, head of the department of zoology Prof. A S Bellad and lecturer Mangala suggested that the monkey, also known as Hanuman Langoor, could be preserved in the zoology museum of the college after being stuffed by taxidermists.

They called up renowned taxidermist Mohan Morey, who had worked in the college as senior taxidermist for over three decades and requested him to do the stuffing. Naveen Pyatimani, who works as the curator at the zoology laboratory, took up the responsibility and completed the stuffing under the guidance of Morey in a month.

Speaking to TOI on Wednesday, Morey said the right part of the monkey’s body had been damaged due to burning but after stuffing, it looks normal.

“People should visit the zoology museum and see the stuffed animals and birds there. They look like being alive” Morey said.
