Porsche Starts Rolling Out Its 800-Volt Fast-Chargers

Porsche has just finished work on its first 800-volt DC fast-charging stations, located at the Berlin-Adlershof Technology Park in Germany.

Porsche refers to these as its Turbo Charging stations and they offer double the voltage of most existing 400-volt DC fast-charging stations. Consequently, the Turbo Charging stations can charge an electric car with a Combined Charging Standard connector in as little as 20 minutes for a 250-mile range.

To make sure the stations don’t overheat, Porsche has implemented advanced liquid-cooling technology.

Unlike Tesla which has proprietary charging stations, Porsche believes it is important to allow future electric cars to all use common chargers. As a result, the Turbo Charging stations will provide electricity to all EVs, starting with those in Berlin.

The introduction of Porsche charging stations is also an important part of the automaker’s strategy to ensure its Taycan electric sedan can be quickly and easily charged around the world from the moment deliveries commence.

As a matter of fact, the German automaker announced earlier this year that it will construct 500 stations across the United States at its 189 dealerships and along major highways in the country. By the second half of 2019, Porsche wants to have all of these stations up and running.

When the Taycan hits the streets, the 800-volt stations will be capable of topping up the battery to 80 per cent capacity in a mere 15 minutes. When charged fully, the Tesla Model S rival should offer a range exceed 300 miles (482 km). Such an impressive range, combined with characteristic Porsche performance and handling, should make the Mission E a very exciting car indeed.
