Indore: A team of state excise department seized liquor worth Rs 60 lakh which was being carried from city to Nemawar in a truck on Tuesday. The department officials have arrested a person who was taking the liquor illegally. He is being questioned about the consigner and consignee. Additional district excise officer Santosh Kushwah told Free Press that 800 boxes containing McDowell’s whisky were seized along with the truck. He said the truck belongs to Chhattisgarh.
Alok Khare, assistant commissioner of excise department, had received information that the liquor worth lakhs of rupees is being transported from the city illegally in a truck heading towards Nemawar. After receiving information, circle inspector Jitendra Bhadoriya and his team swung into action and spotted a speeding 10-wheeled truck moving towards Double Chowki.
After seeing officials of excise department, truck driver speeded up truck but the officials stopped him near petrol pump on Nemawar Road. The driver named Rakesh Sardar, 30, a resident of Dhar, also tried to flee from after parking the truck but he was caught from there.
When tarpaulin of the truck was removed, the department officials were stunned to see liquor in large quantity. They asked for papers, which Rakesh could not produce.
Driver Rakesh told police that he is unaware about the consigner and consignee as he was told by a person to carry some goods to Nemawar. He had picked the liquor boxes from a dhaba in Bypass area in the city. The dhaba from where he picked up the liquor was raided to get more information.
