Jodie Whittaker, who is making history as the first woman to play the iconic Time Lord in 'Doctor Who', has said she hopes to inspire young girls with the casting.
"There's the chiseled superhero that we're used to seeing and we've all grown up with," the 36-year-old said in an interview with Radio Times, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
"But 'Doctor Who' has never been that, which is wonderful. It's attainable in so many ways. And now it isn't just attainable for half of the population. The other half can be the Doctor as well," he added.
Whittaker, who follows in the footsteps of the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, added, "Girls will no longer just think, 'Oh, I could be a companion.' Being the first female Doctor and showing children that their heroes in shows don't always look the same is a huge honour for me."
The new series will see Whittaker's Time Lord joined by new companions played by Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole.
The new season, which is being helmed by 'Broadchurch' writer Chris Chibnall, is widely expected to be released in October.
