A walk in the park for the host thanks to Root and Morgan’s unbeaten, massive partnership and Rashid’s restrictive wicket-taking spell

England scripted a remarkable turnaround by clinching the three-match One-Day International series against India 2-1 after cantering to a facile eight-wicket win in the decider on Tuesday.

Joe Root hit a second successive century (100 not out), while Eoin Morgan smashed an unbeaten 88 as the duo shared a match-winning unbeaten 186-run unconquered stand to script a successful run-chase on a track which seemed to have eased out later in the day.

Openers James Vince (27) and Jonny Bairstow (30) had given England a good start, amassing 43 in 4.4 overs.

With this win, England exacted revenge for its 2-1 loss in the T20 series.

This is also the first victory for the host in limited-overs cricket over India since 2011.

Earlier, skipper Virat Kohli cracked a strokeful 71 before England dished out some disciplined bowling effort to restrict India to a modest 256 for eight.

Stressful

Kohli scored 71 off 72 balls, inclusive of eight fours, but the Indian innings faltered in face of some quality spin bowling by Adil Rashid, who took three for 49 to hurt the middle order. Left-arm medium-pacer David Willey also claimed three wickets to contribute to his team.

Kohli forged a 71-run partnership for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (44) but after the duo was dismissed, under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 42 off 66 balls to shepherd the innings in the latter half.

Kohli’s innings ended when he was bowled by a superb leg-break from Rashid that pitched on leg stump and hit off. Tail-ender Shardul Thakur (22) then blasted a 13-ball 22 with the help of two sixes to take India across the 250-mark.

Three changes

India made three changes to its side after the Lord’s defeat. Dinesh Karthik came in for K.L. Rahul, who was dropped after his two-ball duck, while a fit-again Bhuvneshwar and Thakur replaced Umesh Yadav and Siddarth Kaul.
