Gender Revolution with Katie Couric

SBS Viceland, 9pm

If you know nothing about the transgender movement, which includes people whose gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex or those who do not exclusively identify as female or male, then this National Geographic co-production, which debuted in early 2017, may suffice as a primer.

But the documentary definitely has an air of kindly befuddlement, courtesy of host Katie Couric, who alternates between concerned sympathy with a lack of information and a zealous over-questioning of others that treads on cultural toes.

It's made to shuffle a very mainstream American audience a little closer to sympathy, but despite the testimony of transgender people and experts who work with them it neglects to simply recognise that transgender people are, first and foremost, people.
