Smelling a rat over the ban on fish imports from outside Goa, the Congress party on Wednesday questioned the government on announcing the ban on the eve of the monsoon session of the state legislative assembly.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji, former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes said the decision of the government to ban the import of fish has come on the eve of the beginning of the monsoon session.

“The government is aware that it will be taken to task by Congress MLAs. Hence they have enacted this tiatr to fool Goans,” he said.

He questioned the government for not banning the fish imports last week itself when the formalin episode had broken out.

“Who will ensure that the fish, which will be imported after the expiry of the ban, will be safe for human consumption,” he asked adding that the suppliers of the formalin-laced

fish should be booked for attempt to murder.

Party spokesperson Urfan Mulla questioned the Chief Minister on the delay in banning the fish imports, adding that their fight is not against any political party.
