Govt to step in amid drought fear

Agriculture Minister Randhir Singh said that due to less rainfall than normal in the State there has been adverse impact on sowing of kharif crops. Compared to last year, it has received 40.2 mm rainfall till July 17.

“The Government is monitoring the situation of rain. If the condition of rainfall does not improve by August 15 then the Government will provide seeds and other necessary help to the farmers for alternative crops,” he said on Tuesday.

He added that situation of rain in Garhwa, Koderma and Jamtada district is worrisome. “District officials have been instructed for contingency crop here.

Work is being done by coordinating with Disaster Management Department. Farmer call center will work for 24 hours in the state to help the farmers. Farmers have been advised to sow such crop in case of low rainfall which requires less water. Contingent crop programs have been prepared for the farmers,” added the Minister. Agriculture Secretary Pooja Singhal and other officials of the Department were also present.
