‘Special Courts Act a strong weapon’

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) will take up 28 Disproportionate Assets (DA) cases, which have been pending for the last two-and-a-half-years, under the AP Special Courts Act, 2016, said Director General of Police and ACB Director General, R.P. Thakur.

Under the Act, the properties of the accused officer would be confiscated in six months and case would be disposed of in a year, Mr. Thakur said at a press conference held here on Tuesday.

Once the tainted officer gets conviction, the government would take over the seized properties, he added.

“ 28 cases, in which the value of the seized properties is more than ₹1 crore (as per Sub-Registrar) will come under the Special Courts Act. The cases have been pending since 2016 in the five special courts in the State,” the DGP said.

Already, ACB slapped the Act in one case and more cases would be argued under the same Act, he said.

He also explained that measures were being taken to prevent corruption by organising awareness programmes in educational institutions.

Mr. Thakur said the ACB had completed construction of own buildings in all 13 districts in the State in less than a year.

‘Expedite investigations’

Instructions have been given to the officers to focus on speedy investigation of the cases, the DGP added.

ACB Directors Shanka Brata Bagchi and P. Hari Kumar, Special Additional Director Abraham Lincoln, Joint Directors Mohan Rao and Gangadhar, and SP Jagannadh Reddy were among those present at the press conference.
