TIRUVANNAMALAI: Three persons were arrested on charges of raping a 21-year-old Russian woman in Tiruvannamalai on Tuesday. The victim had been found unconscious in her room at a guesthouse on Monday having allegedly been gang-raped. She had suffered grievous injuries during the assault and Tiruvannamalai town station police admitted her to government medical college hospital after being alerted by the locals.

“We have roped in a Russian to translate the victim’s statement as the victim speaks only Russian. She has regained consciousness and is fine now,” said V Vanitha, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
The victim had arrived in Tiruvannamalai on July 12 as part of a holiday trip. She was staying at a guest house on the Girivalam path, police said.

The three men have been arrested under Section 376 (rape) and Section 511 of the Indian Penal Code. Police are investigating the case and questioning the accused. Tiruvannamalai district judge G Mahizhenthi said that victim compensation would be given to the woman in a day or two as per the law. The District Legal Services Authority told the police to collect details of all foreigners staying in the district to prevent such crimes.
