Bay of Bengal missing fishermen: One body found, 18 still missing

A pall of gloom has descended on the villages of the missing fishermen in Namkhana area of South 24 Parganas who are expecting the worst.

KOLKATA: More than 24 hours after 19 fishermen on three fishing trawlers went missing in the high seas in Bay of Bengal, the dead body of one fisherman and wreckages of a trawler was found on Wednesday evening.

"Dead body of one fisherman and pieces of one trawler was found in the international waters on Wednesday. The search operation led by Coast Guard is on for the remaining missing fishermen," Sundarbans Superintendent of Police Tathagata Basu said.

The fisherman is yet to be identified. On the other hand, a pall of gloom has descended on the villages of the missing fishermen in Namkhana area of South 24 Parganas who are expecting the worst.

A Coast Guard hovercraft and an airplane besides local trawlers are scanning the sea for the missing fishermen. The fishermen had gone to the sea in the morning of July 16 and got caught in a storm on Tuesday afternoon.
