In a major breakthrough, the State police have nabbed Mohammed, the prime accused in the killing of Students Federation of India (SFI) activist Abhimanyu at the Maharaja's College in Kochi on July 1.
Mohammed, a third year Arabic History student at the same college and president of the Campus Front of India unit, was reportedly held at the Kerala-Karnataka border. He is said to have been hiding at Goa after Abhimanyu's death, one that had caused widespread outrage in the State.
The arrest is a matter of great relief for the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its government in Kerala which had come under tremendous pressure owing to the perceived delay in nabbing the key accused. The police had laid a dragnet for them and had arrested or taken into preventive custody several activists of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political arm of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the parent body of the Campus Front, over the past fortnight.
State Police Chief Loknath Behera called on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his office here this morning and briefed him about the arrest of the key accused.
