NEW DELHI: Former Rajya Sabha MP and journalist Chandan Mitra quit BJP after being sidelined by the party chief Amit Shah.

Considered an L K Advani loyalist, Mitra had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from the Hooghly Parliamentary constituency in West Bengal.

Mitra had been a two-term Rajya Sabha MP from 2003 to 2016. He was first nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2003 when the BJP led NDA was in power at the Centre.

Mitra had been a prominent BJP face in television debates until the leadership transition in the run-up to the 2014 elections of the saffron outfit. Mitra was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2010 from Madhya Prdaesh.

With Advani relegated to the Margdarshak Mandal after Shah took over as the BJP chief, Mitra was left with no party responsibility. Speculations are rife that Mitra could be joining the Trinamool Congress.
