PUNE: If you felt like wearing a jacket or draping a shawl on Tuesday as it felt unusually cooler than a typical
monsoon morning, there's a reason for it.
Tuesday turned out to be the coolest July morning in the past 11 years,
IMD temperature data revealed. City's minimum temperature dipped to an unusual 20.6°C, despite the high humidity in the last few days due to the rain.
This temperature dip is quite close to the 18.9°C July minimum temperature witnessed almost a century ago in Pune in the year 1920.
City’s minimum temperature began dipping after July 1 and has been below 30°C ever since. The normal day temperature during July is 28.3°C, but this temperature has been lower than this mark since June 2 on many days. For instance, on July16, the maximum temperature dipped to 24.3°C, lower than the normal by 3.6 degrees.
This has had an effect on night temperatures too, as the lack of solar radiation or in layman’s terms, ‘sunshine’, has cooled down the city considerably.
A K Srivastava, head of climate monitoring and analysis group at IMD, told TOI that the day temperatures have been low since the past eight to ten days, below normal too on some days. “The skies have also been cloudy over the last few days, which is hindering solar radiation from reaching the earth’s surface. When the days are cooler, it automatically causes the night to cool down too as the effects of heating from solar radiation during the day are almost non-existent,” he said.
During seven years from the last decade, the lowest that the minimum temperature has fallen during July has been to 21°C or slightly above that.
