The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday permitted the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) to conduct a public meeting in Thoothukudi as a mark of respect to those who were killed in police firing during the anti-Sterlite protests.

Justice D. Krishnakumar, hearing the plea of the SDPI, allowed participation of a total of 500 people in the event which could be held only for two hours. An undertaking in this regard should be sent to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi, and the officer should consider the representation, the court said.

The petitioner, A. Kader Mohideen of Thoothukudi, an SDPI member, sought permission to conduct a public meeting on July 21 as a token of respect to those who were killed during the anti-Sterlite protests.
