MADURAI: In a bid to tackle pollution of Vaigai river, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said that treatment plants would be set up in order to treat sewage water before releasing it to the river.
On Sunday, Palaniswami, in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a four-lane flyover at Kalavasal junction in Madurai. The flyover will be constructed at a cost of `54.07 crores under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme of Highways and Minor Ports Department.

Addressing the gathering, Palaniswami said that the government, following the footsteps of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, had fulfilled the long-pending demand of the people by laying the foundation stone for the four-lane flyover. The flyover would reduce traffic congestion in the area, Palaniswami added.
He said that in order to commence the works of the construction of the flyover at another traffic congested area of Goripalayam junction, “we have directed the highways officials to rework on the project so that the work could be done with less land acquisition.”

In an attempt to reduce the accidents at the service road of Sellur railway bridge, a new service road will be laid on the banks of the Vaigai river at Kulamangalam road at an estimated cost of three crores.
A new four-lane road from MGR Bus Stand to Koodal Nagar radio station would be constructed at a cost of 50 crore while Pandikoil Ring Road will be constructed with funds to the tune of 56 crores, Palaniswami added.
