For the third time in a week, Canberra set a new low for the year
If you thought the -6.3 and -6.5 in the past week were chilly, well Canberra had a surprise for you on Monday.
The mercury dropped all the way to minus 7.3 degrees about 6.30am, when the apparent temperature was closer to minus 11 degrees.
That's colder than Perisher and Thredbo dropped to overnight, at minus 4.6 and minus 5.4 respectively.
Canberra set an overnight low for the year on Wednesday at minus 6.3 degrees, before going a step further by dropping to minus 6.5 in the early hours of Saturday.
On Saturday, Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jordan Notara said a high-pressure system over the territory was causing clear skies and widespread frost.
Mr Notara said a front moving over the territory was expected to bring some rain during the week, most likely late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
The bureau says those freezing mornings are likely to take a break later this week - at least for a little bit.
While Tuesday and Wednesday are forecast to be a relatively balmy minus 1, it's still below freezing. But Thursday is tipped to hit zero overnight, and Friday is expected to be a postively warm night with a minimum of 4 degrees. Of course, then it's meant to be back to a couple of minus 3 degree nights on the weekend.
Canberra has battled sub-zero mornings since last Monday, making for some stunning scenes around the capital.
The rest of Monday is expected to be a partly cloudy day with a top of 11 degrees. While there is frost and patch fog in the morning, the forecast is for light winds becoming northwesterly 20 to 30 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the late evening.
