A 52-year-old traffic police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning, three days after being grievously injured in a hit-and-run case in Chanakyapuri.

Head injuries

ASI Mahavir Singh was on duty under Chanakyapuri traffic circle and was deployed at Yashwant Palace along with other policemen to check drunk driving.

“A team of five traffic policemen was deployed at the barricade to check drunk driving. At 11.30 p.m., a silver hatchback approaching towards the barricades was flagged down by a traffic policeman. The driver slowed down initially before accelerating all of a sudden. Mahavir, who was standing near the barricade, was hit by the car. The driver managed to flee,” said a senior traffic police officer.

‘Will be arrested soon’

Mahavir sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was admitted to the ICU. Other policeman at the spot called the police control room immediately after the accident.

“A case has been registered against the offending vehicle at Chanakyapuri police station. The police are scanning footage from CCTV cameras to find out the car’s registration number. The driver was drunk. In an attempt to evade drunk driving checking, he killed a traffic policeman. He will be arrested and tough action will be taken against him,” added the officer.

The deceased ASI was cremated with full State honours. His wife is an ASI with Haryana Police.
