Monday alert: Heavy rain, strong winds to continue in Mumbai

The city and its suburbs witnessed intermittent moderate to heavy showers with gusty winds on Sunday with a few very heavy spells in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) such as Vasai, Virar, Palghar and Thane.

Between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Sunday, the suburbs recorded 56.2mm rain (moderate) while south Mumbai recorded 10mm rain (light). Location-wise rainfall data showed that between 8.30am to 5.30pm, Mulund recorded 72.8mm rain, followed by Powai at 58.2mm and Bhandup at 52.4mm rain. In other parts of MMR, Vasai recorded 89mm, Virar 72mm, Thane 83mm, and Dahanu 37mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

The city also experienced its highest tide of the monsoon — at 4.97m — on Sunday.

According to the weather department’s classification, 15.6mm to 64.4mm of rain is considered ‘moderate’, 64.5mm to 115.5mm is ‘heavy’, 115.6mm to 204.4mm is ‘very heavy’ and more than 204.5mm is ‘extreme’.

The weather bureau’s forecast for Monday and Tuesday said, “Intermittent rain with heavy showers at a few places and very heavy rain at one or two places in the city and suburbs.”

“The low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal has become well-marked, which has strengthened local weather systems such as two upper air cyclonic circulations over south Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. These weather factors are leading to moderate to heavy showers over Mumbai and surrounding areas, which is expected to persist for the next 48 hours from Sunday,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meanwhile, the day temperature, which was closer to the normal mark on Saturday, fell almost two degree Celsius below normal owing to sporadic rainfall. Santacruz recorded 28.7 degrees Celsius and Colaba recorded 28.7 degrees Celsius. The night temperature was closer to the normal mark (around 25 degrees Celsius) at both locations. Moisture levels were at 95% humidity in the suburbs and 94% in south Mumbai.
