Guv plants mango saplings on Harela

Uttarakhand Governor Krishan Kant Paul on Sunday planted saplings of less sweet varieties (Pusa, Surya, Lalima and Arunima) of mangoes at Raj Bhawan on the occasion of Harela. He directed  the horticulture department to make such saplings available to the people.

Greeting the people of the state on Harela, the governor said that this festival was important both due to its cultural dimension as well as from the point of view of environment conservation.   “Uttarakhand is the land of the Chipko movement and a strong message of environment protection must go out from here,” he said. He called upon the people of the state to plant trees at their homes  and parks and look after them.

The horticulture director RC Srivastav said on the occasion that saplings of these varieties of mangoes had been prepared at Kashipur centre and were being made available to farmers. Commercial cultivation of these varieties  had been started in Terai. On June 23 and 24 ,the Arunima variety mango was awarded the first prize at the Lucknow  Mango Festival.
