Fans say #SaveWentworth amid rumours Foxtel has axed popular series
Fans have reacted angrily to rumours Foxtel has axed its popular Logies-winning prison series Wentworth.
Reports circulating Monday suggested Foxtel, which has aired the Fremantle Media production since its launch in May 2013, would not be picking up the series after its seventh season airs in 2019.
Speaking on Melbourne's 3AW, entertainment reporter Peter Ford said the show's set in Newport was "currently being dismantled".
But in a statement to Fairfax Media, Foxtel refused to be drawn on the rumours.
"Discussions between Foxtel and Fremantle Media regarding future seasons of Wentworth continue," their statement read.
The show is currently filming its seventh season in Melbourne, with production set to wrap on Friday July 27.
The series - a contemporary reboot of Prisoner, which has earned a cult following in the US and UK and praise for its female-focused storylines - picked up wins for Most Outstanding Drama Series, Most Popular Drama Program, and Most Outstanding Actress for Pamela Rabe at this month's Logies ceremony on the Gold Coast.
Rumours around its axing began circulating among crew members and fans earlier this month, with one follower launching a petition to force Foxtel's hand into holding onto the show or allowing it to be picked up by ABC, SBS, Netflix or Stan.
Amid confusion over the show's future, the petition surged to over 2,000 signatures on Monday.
Appearing on Studio 10 on Monday morning, star Sigrid Thornton said she had only heard the rumour of its axing in the "makeup chair" just before her appearance, but hinted at other developments.
"My lips are sealed... I can't tell you how sworn to secrecy Wentworth cast members actually are," she told host Sarah Harris, putting the emphasis on the show's dedicated fans.
"The depth of that fanbase is such as I've never seen - they will sniff out a rumour before the rumour's anywhere."
