It’s mid-July and Ahmedabad is 81% rain deficient

AHMEDABAD: It is mid-July and Ahmedabad city has just received 90mm of rain. On the same day in 2017, the city had received 250mm. According to the India Meteorological department, the state as on July 16, has a rain deficit of 12%.

According to IMD, the state has received 208mm of rain so far. Till July 16, 236mm would be the normal figure. IMD officials said Ahmedabad district currently has a 81% rain deficit. It should have got 213.4mm but has had only 77.2mm so far.

IMD officials said that the biggest rain deficit is in Kutch, 95%, followed by 91% in Devbhoomi Dwarka. Dang district has had the most rainfall, having already got 1,072.4mm. The normal figure for Dang at this time of the year is 609.9mm.

According to officials in the revenue control room, the state has so far received 296.78mm of rain which is just 35% of the 831 average seasonal rainfall. Officials said five talukas in the state have not received any rainfall yet. These talukas are Bhachau, Bhuj, Gandhidham and Mandvi in Kutch district and Maliya Miyana in Morbi district.

Officials data shows that Kutch district has received the least rainfall, just 5mm, which is 1.3% of its average annual rainfall of 417mm. Officials added that 34 talukas have not received more than 50mm of rain.

Officials said that a clear division has been seen in the state, with south Gujarat, parts of Saurashtra and central Gujarat getting adequate rain, but Kutch, north Gujarat and the districts of Surendranagar and Ahmedabad have not received much rain. Officials said central Gujarat also has a rain deficit this year.
