BTech student in Punjab awaits ex-boyfriend’s arrest for sharing her obscene videos

A 20-year-old engineering student, who is pursuing studies from a private university in Mohali in Punjab, has been awaiting action against her ex-boyfriend who circulated her objectionable pictures on social media and threatened her with dire consequences.

Even as the Mohali police had registered a case in December last year, no further headway has been made in the case.

Even that action came after the girl took to Twitter and posted more than 100 messages seeking justice from Punjab Police and the Prime Minister.

Both the victim and accused Sushant Kumar hail from Patna in Bihar. The two were studying together there and were in a relationship for a year. Later, however, the relationship ended over some issues.

The girl says the accused started calling her and sending messages to her, pressurising her for marriage. By that time, she had moved to Mohali.

When the girl objected, Kumar allegedly circulated her obscene pictures and videos on WhatsApp groups. Later, he allegedly made her fake profile and started contacting her relatives and friends and sharing with them the same videos.

“Initially, I struggled to get an FIR registered. Now, even after its registration, it has been seven months, but no action has been taken. Why it is taking so long for police to arrest him?” said the girl.

The case had been registered under Sections 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides Sections 67 and 67A (publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act) of the Information Technology Act.

However, the girl keeps seeking justice through her Twitter profile. She has posted around 175 messages and even tagged the Mataur police station, where the case was registered.

“He threatened me, blackmailed me, but this matter is not being taken seriously. When I last spoke to police, I was told now the cyber cell is looking into my case.”

Mohali senior superintendent of police Kuldeep Singh Chahal said, “The matter is being probed. Action will be taken soon.”
